Align the Lens Correctly
Align the lens to the camera correctly, so that the squash/stretch axis of the lens aligns with the camera sensor. When it isn’t aligned, images will be subtly skewed. The match-move will have to precisely determine the misalignment. It’s best if there is a hard mechanical alignment such as a notch and setscrew. In other cases, we’ve heard it recommended to shine a flashlight into the lens and then rotate the lens until the anamorphic flares are perfectly horizontal, as seen in a large camera monitor.
Note: While a match-move will determine the misalignment, it won’t remove it. If the misalignment is bad enough to need removal, you can export the solved shot to Nuke or Fusion, then connect the un-distort pipeline to the redistort pipeline—but set the rotation angle to zero in the
redistort pipe. You’ll need to crop a little at the end to prevent clipped corners.
